A1 - Pete Cooper - Introduction to Old-Time American Fiddle Music
Teaching tunes from Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia, Pete will introduce the techniques, particularly the bowing patterns, that define Old Time style.

A2 - Matt Cranitch - Introduction to Irish Fiddle Music
For players who are beginning to play Irish music. Special attention will be given to bowing, particularly in the context of the appropriate rhythmic articulation for the different tune-types. Ornamentation, melodic variation and repertoire development will also be considered, and the more general features of the various Irish fiddle-playing styles will be outlined.

Some of the more complex and spectacular music from American fiddle tradition.

As Irish Set Dancing becomes more popular in many places including the UK, fiddlers will often be called upon to play for it. Matt will be teaching some suitable tunes, and addressing the issue in general.

B3 - Giles Lewin - Understanding Fiddle Styles
A journey through the whole territory of bowing, ornamentation, accent and articulation, discovering how similar techniques crop up in different fiddling traditions, with tunes from a variety of cultures.

B4 - Sian Phillips - Welsh Tunes in Harmony
Playing harmonies with music from Welsh tradition.

B5 – Gill Redmond - Busking Along on the Cello
How to make up your own basses and harmonies on the cello.

SUNDAY
C1 - Pete Cooper - Old-Time String Band
The unique sound of the American string band, for fiddles and any other string instruments. Traditionally, banjo, mandolin, guitar and bass, but why not bring cellos and violas as well?

C2 - Matt Cranitch - Music of Sliabh Luachra
The emphasis will be on the special repertoire of the Sliabh Luachra region, which is located in the south-west of Ireland. The types of tunes played in this area, in particular slides and polkas, will be considered in detail, especially with regard to creating the characteristic rhythms associated with this music.

Renaissance to baroque - an early music band for fiddles, violas, cellos and basses

Some of the music for the weekend will be available a few weeks beforehand for download online, so that you can print off the pages you need. There will also be mp3 files of the music being played.
